Hello, Brian!

Based on feedback from our current fellows, Martekuor and Mike, I wanted to provide you some additional sources of information about our program — specifically, a more visual look at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Washington Hospital Center (WHC), as well as a review of the fellowship schedule.

First, here some photos of the Hatfield Clinical Center, where our fellows work at NIH — the exterior and interior, including the fellows’ work space. In addition, I have linked two videos that may help give you a sense of the NIH — the first is a virtual tour of the clinical center, and the second is an overview of graduate medical education at NIH:

Next, here are some photos of Washington Hospital Center — the exterior and interior, including the fellows’ work space. In addition, I have linked a video overview of WHC geared towards new employees, but which I hope will give you a sense of the hospital:

Finally, I wanted to review the fellowship schedule that we discussed on your interview day. The default plan is for fellows to spend Thursdays at Georgetown longitudinally throughout the year seeing C-L outpatients with me and Pauline Tsai; they spend the rest of the week at WHC for 6 months and NIH for 6 months. A Thursday at Georgetown usually consists of 1 new outpatient eval and 2 follow-ups, in addition to supervision, didactic time, and grand rounds. For both the half of their year at NIH and the half of their year at WHC, fellows are encouraged to take up to a month to pursue elective interests. Electives can be longitudinal (for instance, a former fellow used every Friday to work on research projects she had begun as a NIH Clinical Research Fellow), or in a block (for instance, Martekuor has an interest in global mental health and is currently planning to do a monthlong elective in Kenya next spring), or in smaller chunks (for instance, a former fellow did 1-2 week stints on the palliative medicine services at WHC and NIH). As a fellow, you are not required to pursue electives, but we want to make sure you feel supported in following your interests.

Thanks again for your interest in our C-L psychiatry fellowship program here at Georgetown!
